Healthy Babies First Foods Class
Thursday, March 26th, 2009Goal:
To provide a hands on nutritional education program for Aboriginal Head Start. The program will focus on maintaining/creating a healthy open and fun environment where participants feel welcome in learning how to introduce Babies First Foods. The focus of the program will be that first foods can form a lasting impression and curriculum will be designed around Health Canada’s Food Guide Program as well as the World Health Organization Standards for feeding your infant. By starting your babies off with healthy foods you will help give them a jump start on lifelong good eating habits.
Objective:
At the end of each module participants will understand how to feed their infant at various developmental stages. Participants will help prepare baby food and take home sample baby food items which can be used at home. The course content is designed to provide awareness that homemade baby food is nutritious, easy to prepare and affordable.
Program Content:
This program is structured into six, two hour modules. An informative package will be provided to all class participants at each module. Open discussion and parent led conversations are welcome and encouraged.

Goal 2:
To attract full participation throughout the duration of the program I suggest offering some extra incentives. AHS may consider offering participants a small selection of foods to take home to make additional baby food or share with their family. Door Prize baskets may include food processing and baby feeding equipment. This may further encourage participants to continue to make healthy baby foods at home as they will have all the equipment and food necessary.
A great way to promote Healthy Eating for the family.
The instructor will provide information packages at each class, with informative handouts about Infant Feeding, Oral Health, Nutrition and Baby Food Recipes.
Following is a list of door prize ideas you may wish to supplement the program with.
